Sage Shower with Built-In Niche in Tahoe Park

Sage green arch-shaped wall tiles in a shower with illuminated built-in niche and white grid lower tiles in a Tahoe Park home bathroom

About this project

This Tahoe Park bathroom remodel centered on a new shower with a design that pairs sage green arch-format wall tiles in the upper zone with white grid tile in the lower zone, divided by a horizontal ledger shelf. The built-in niche was framed during the rough-in stage, waterproofed on all four interior faces and the back wall using sheet membrane, then tiled with the same white grid tile as the lower shower zone.

The arch tile format — sometimes called picket or lance — requires careful layout so the arched tops of each tile align horizontally across the wall. We dry-laid the pattern before setting to find the optimal starting course and avoid half-arches at the ceiling line. The lower zone uses a standard 4x4 white tile in a straight stack pattern with tight grout joints to create a clean contrast with the organic arch profile above.

What we did

1

Frame and waterproof niche on all interior surfaces with sheet membrane

2

Apply Schluter Kerdi membrane to full shower walls and pan

3

Set lower zone white grid tile, then upper zone sage arch tile

4

Tile niche interior, grout all surfaces, seal grout, and install caulk at movement joints
