Herringbone Shower Remodel in Tahoe Park
About this project
This was a full shower replacement in a Tahoe Park home — the original fiberglass surround was removed and replaced with a fully tiled shower using dark gray stone-look porcelain in a herringbone pattern on the walls. The compact bathroom footprint typical of Tahoe Park's postwar construction meant careful planning to make the herringbone pattern start and end symmetrically on each wall.
The waterproofing system used was a liquid-applied membrane (RedGard) on the cement board substrate, applied in two coats with special attention to the pan liner corners and the curb. The shower floor uses small-format matte gray tile to allow the floor to pitch toward the drain without visible lippage. Grout is a dark charcoal blend that reads as part of the tile pattern rather than a contrast element.
What we did
Remove fiberglass surround and inspect framing and moisture damage
Install cement board backer and apply RedGard waterproofing membrane in two coats
Set herringbone wall tile from floor to ceiling, centered on each wall face
Set mosaic floor tile with proper pitch to drain, grout, and seal
