Gray Stone Hallway in Oak Park

Gray stone-look porcelain tile floor in a renovated Oak Park home entry and hallway

About this project

This entry and hallway floor was part of a broader renovation of a bungalow-style home on a residential block in Oak Park, just south of Broadway. The house had been vacant for some time before the current owner began the renovation. The original flooring was removed during demo, leaving a concrete slab in decent condition with a few patched areas near the front door where prior plumbing work had been done.

The tile is a gray stone-look matte porcelain in a 12x24 format, laid in a stacked horizontal pattern. The matte finish was chosen deliberately — high-traffic entry areas with Sacramento's dusty outdoor environment show scuffs more on polished tile than on matte. The 12x24 format in a hallway is laid with the long dimension running down the corridor, which emphasizes the length of the space and creates a cleaner look than a square tile would in the same width.

What we did

1

Patch slab at plumbing repair areas, check flatness across the corridor

2

Plan layout with long tile dimension running the length of the hall

3

Set 12x24 matte gray porcelain with polymer-modified thinset at full coverage

4

Grout with matching gray, clean, and seal grout joints
